DCMM and City Host Dual Coast Guard Celebration

The City of Sturgeon Bay and the Door County Maritime Museum cordially invite the media and the public to join us in a dual celebration on Thursday, APRIL 24 at 11am at the Door County Maritime Museum, 120 North Madison Avenue, Sturgeon Bay.

The City of Sturgeon Bay will celebrate its five-year re-designation as an official US Coast Guard City. Sturgeon Bay is truly a “Coast Guard City”, sharing a long, rich heritage with three local Coast Guard units and the many Coast Guard personnel and their families who have called Sturgeon Bay their home. For nearly 140 years, the City of Sturgeon Bay has enjoyed a long and productive relationship with the United States Coast Guard and its predecessor services. The City and the entire community recognize the long-standing and enduring relationship between Sturgeon Bay, Door County and the United States Coast Guard (and its predecessor services) on the peninsula. The City of Sturgeon Bay – a proud US Coast Guard City since 2014 – continues to demonstrate a vibrant and ongoing commitment to supporting our relationships with the Coast Guard personnel in our community.

Door County Maritime Museum will cut the ribbon on their new Baumgartner Gallery exhibition, “Sentinels of the Door,” which recognizes the history of the United States Coast Guard in Door County. The Coast Guard, and the organizations that preceded it, have had a presence in the area since 1836 when Wisconsin’s first lighthouse was built on Rock Island. The US Lighthouse Establishment slowly grew until it had built the 11 lighthouses that surround Door County today. These beacons were built to guide mariners through the surrounding waters to the safe havens of the harbors that dot the peninsula. The “Sentinels of the Door” exhibit takes its name from the motto of the Coast Guard Cutter that was stationed in Sturgeon Bay in the 1970s. The USCGC Mesquite called itself the Sentinel of the Door because it patrolled the waters surrounding Door County and the Death’s Door Passage. The Museum is honored to host an enduring reminder of everything the Coast Guard has done for our country and our community.
